Scalby Ness is another good location for collecting plant remains from. It is not so highly productive as other Yorkshire locations due to the limited area. You can still find some very nice plant remains from the boulders on the foreshore.

Location Information

Scalby Ness yields excellent plant remains, but the area of collecting is quite limited. You can still find some very nice specimens quite easily.

(Suitable for children)

This location is easy to access and children can visit. Please ensure they take care as the foreshore is rocky. Young children may struggle to walk to this location.

Access to the shore at scalby is easy and it is nice and quick to get to this location. You park in a pay and display carpark.

Foreshore, Cliff

Most of the fossils can be found within the boulders and ledges on the foreshore, but they can also be found in the layers within the cliff face.

Common sense when collecting at all locations should be taken and knowledge of tide times should always be noted. Please keep away from the cliff face as falls can be quite common along this coastline. It is also very easy to get cut off from the tide, so please ensure you return before the tide turns.

Scalby Ness is an excellent location for plant remains, but you could also try Whitehaven in Cumbria, Little Haven, Nelton Haven in wales, Offerton in Cheshire, Besom Hill and New Hay Quarry in Lancashire or try Writhlington in Avon. which is very similar or try Jurassic plant remains from Yorkshire, Cloughton Wyke, Filey, Hayburn Wyke, Scalby Ness, Gristhorpe Bay. In Scotland, you can also try Anstruther, East Wemyss, or Crail.
